Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay had a close relationship with her Aunt Denise, who encouraged DuVernay to be creative and drawn by the arts. Aunt Denise was a nurse who was a night shift worker so that she could devote her day to art literature as well as theater, among other things. DuVernay was brought to the movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay was trained by her mother to understand that the art form could be utilized as an instrument for activism. DuVernay was educated by her mother who was a social conscience, and encouraged DuVernay to express herself through art. DuVernay who was born alongside her extended family at Compton was a summer resident in Lowndes County Alabama in the family home of her father. Her father was awed by the iconic civil rights demonstration through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the close-by community of Selma Alabama. DuVernay was able to use the summers she was in Selma to help inspire her next film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay earned her high school diploma from Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. She went to the University of California Los Angeles where she earned degrees in English in addition to African American Studies. As in school, DuVernay was interested in creating in broadcast journalism. She started as an intern for CBS News during the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay recalled being tasked to observe the house of one of the members of the jury and go through their garbage. The work she was assigned to did not leave her satisfied in journalism, so she decided to go into the public relations business. DuVernay began her work as a junior assistant to publicity in a tiny film studio following her graduation from the college. After this, she founded her own firm of public relations that was named The DuVernay Agency in 1999. The agency has launched a wide range of promotion and lifestyle networks which include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
